[Community-desktop] Question regarding file check-in

I am running ED RC2 client application and have noted some strange
behavior when checking files in and out:

When I open a file (say an Excel spreadsheet), make some changes and click
save, the "check-in" icon is removed automatically from the file in my ED
browser, but the local state still indicates that "No Modifications" were
made on the file and it is still in a locked state.

I then rt click on the file and check it in regardless, but am met with
the prompt "File not modified since fetched from the server. Do you still
want to save the file?". My changes to the file seem to have been
retained when I open it again, but do I even need to check in a file? Is
this the expected behavior?
